SUMMARY:Policy conference: next steps for cancer policy in Wales - inc. discussion relevant to charities - keynotes: Wales Cancer Network\, Cancer Research UK and Cancer Research Wales - Policy Forum for Wales\, Morning\, Friday\, 12th July 2019
DESCRIPTION:Policy Forum for Wales Keynote Seminar\nThe future for cancer policy in Wales: research\, public health\, meeting the new waiting times target and next steps following the Cancer Delivery Plan\nwith \nProfessor Tom Crosby\, Medical Director\, Wales Cancer Network \n Andy Glyde\, Public Affairs Manager\, Cancer Research UK \nDr Lee Campbell\, Scientific Projects and Communications Manager\, Cancer Research Wales \nand \nProfessor John Chester\, Cardiff University; Velindre Cancer Centre and Wales Cancer Research Centre; Dr Gareth Davies\, Cwm Taf University Health Board and Wales Cancer Network; Dr Clifford Jones\, Macmillan Primary Care Cancer Framework and Wales Cancer Network; Professor Annmarie Nelson\, Marie Curie Research Centre\, Cardiff University and Martin Rolles\, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board \nBydd cyfieithu ar y pryd ar gael yn y gynhadledd hon \nSimultaneous translation will be available at this conference \nFollow us @PFWEvents | This event is CPD certified \nMorning\, Friday\, 12th July 2019 \nCentral Cardiff \n  \nBook Online | Live Agenda | Sponsorship | Our Website | Unsubscribe \nNote: fees apply to most delegates\, but concessionary and complimentary places are available (subject to terms and conditions – see below). \n*If you think this conference would be of interest to colleagues please feel free to share this email with them* \nDear Ms Hendrickson-Brown \nI am writing to remind you of your invitation to the above seminar\, which will examine the future for cancer care in Wales\, with the https://gov.wales/topics/health/nhswales/plans/cancer-plan/?lang=en“>Wales Cancer Delivery Plan due to conclude next year. \nTaking place at an important stage in the delivery of the Plan itself\, delegates will examine the lessons learnt from its implementation. \nThe conference also discusses the introduction of the Single Suspected Cancer Pathway – which aims to ensure all patients begin treatment within 62 days of the point of suspicion. \nAs we expect discussion relevant to charities – with keynote addresses from Professor Tom Crosby\, Medical Director\, Wales Cancer Network; Andy Glyde\, Public Affairs Manager\, Cancer Research UK and Dr Lee Campbell\, Scientific Projects and Communications Manager\, Cancer Research Wales – we thought this might be of interest. \nNext steps for Wales Cancer Delivery Plan and policy going forward \nDelegates will assess the options for policy post-2020\, with discussion expected on the potential development of a new plan and integration into wider policy documents such as https://gov.wales/topics/health/publications/healthier-wales/?lang=en“>Healthier Wales. \nIssues for consideration include how any strategy can support improvement in treatment\, care and resource-efficiency looking at approaches such as better use of data\, diagnostic screening and biosimilars\, as well as how services can be aligned with the latest research and the provision of a holistic approach to care. \nFurther sessions look forward to implementation of the Delivery Plan in the remainder of its timeframe\, and opportunities for it to be refreshed and refined to bring it into line with latest thinking. \nImplementation of the Single Suspected Cancer Pathway \nDelegates will also look at the implementation of the Single Suspected Cancer Pathway as it begins\, looking at the priorities for diagnostic services\, patient involvement\, seamless movement through the pathway\, the role of research\, and optimising performance. \nWe expect key discussion on how to understand what the new measurement means\, how the new waiting time targets will be used to evaluate and improve performance\, and whether it will lead to more early stage diagnoses. \nWorkforce capabilities and infrastructure development \nAttendees will consider workforce capabilities\, especially around diagnostic gaps\, and the potential impact of training non-specialists and approaches to improving triage to help plug these gaps. It comes as the recent workforce report from the Royal College of Radiologists highlights the falling numbers of clinical oncologists\, with Wales being especially adversely affected. \nIT\, patient data and wider infrastructure needs \nThey will look at improving IT services and the interfaces between primary and secondary care – looking at digitisation of patient data\, seeking to ensure effective collaboration and a seamless system for patients – as well as the broader infrastructure needed to meet the waiting times goal. \nPublic health and awareness \nFurther sessions focus on early diagnosis\, prevention and public health policy including options for achieving a better understanding of health-seeking behaviours – as well as for improving self-reporting of symptoms and reaching out to forgotten and hidden groups with appropriate targeting of awareness strategies. \nThe agenda also considers the role of longer term health strategies\, especially around obesity\, exercise and smoking\, to create a culture change that will reduce incidents of cancer. \nThe agenda in summary \n\nLessons learnt from the Cancer Delivery Plan and where to go next;\nEnsuring cancer policy is aligned with the most up to date research;\nNext steps for the Cancer Delivery Plan – improving treatments\, meeting needs and looking forward to 2020;\nThe role of prevention and early diagnosis in reducing cancer deaths;\nDesigning and delivering cancer pathways – co-production and the role of research; and\nDelivering the Single Suspected Cancer Pathway – providing the resources and leadership to meet the new waiting times.\n\nThe agenda has been structured following consultation with key stakeholders. The draft agenda is copied below my signature\, and a regularly updated version is available to download here. The seminar is organised on the basis of strict impartiality by the Policy Forum for Wales. Follow us @PFWEvents for live updates. \nSpeakers \nWe are pleased to be able to include in this seminar keynote addresses from: Professor Tom Crosby\, Medical Director\, Wales Cancer Network; Andy Glyde\, Public Affairs Manager\, Cancer Research UK and Dr Lee Campbell\, Scientific Projects and Communications Manager\, Cancer Research Wales. \nFurther confirmed speakers include: Professor John Chester\, Professor of Oncology\, School of Medicine\, Cardiff University; Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology\, Velindre Cancer Centre and Director\, Wales Cancer Research Centre; Dr Gareth Davies\, Consultant Interventional Radiologist\, Cwm Taf University Health Board and Clinical Lead for Diagnostics\, Wales Cancer Network; Dr Clifford Jones\, National Programme Lead\, Macmillan Primary Care Cancer Framework and Associate Medical Director\, Wales Cancer Network; Professor Annmarie Nelson\, Scientific Director\, Marie Curie Research Centre\, Cardiff University and Martin Rolles\, Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Cancer Lead\, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board. \nAdditional senior participants are being approached. \nNetworking \nPolicy Forum for Wales seminars present an opportunity to engage with key policymakers and other interested parties\, and are CPD certified (more details). DESCRIPTION:What proposals should be made in the next UK White Paper on social security (welfare benefits)?\nWorkshop: Friday 12 July 2019 1pm-4pm\nVenue: University of Cardiff\nOrganisers: Michael Orton (University of Warwick) and Kate Summers (London School of Economics)\nBackground\nThe social security/welfare benefits system is failing\, with foodbanks and homelessness just two of the most visible signs of this. \nBut there is little agreement\, even within civil society\, on ways forward. \nThe workshop\nThis workshop is one of more than a dozen being held in different parts of the UK to stimulate thinking about the future of social security/welfare benefits\, and provide the opportunity for discussion and collaboration among attendees. \nIn particular\, the workshop will input to a project called the Commission on Social Security (welfare benefits)\, led by Experts by Experience which has issued a Call for Solutions. \nThe Commission is highly innovative in that all the Commissioners are people with experience of claiming benefits. The Commission’s aim is to produce a White Paper style document setting out a better system and building consensus. The Call for Solutions includes questions such as the following. \n\nWhat steps can be taken to make Universal Credit better or if you think it should be scrapped\, what would replace it?\nHow can people who are sick or disabled be better supported and how should the system work out who should get sickness or disability benefits?\nShould there be a minimum income level below which no one can fall and if so\, how could this be done?\nHow should benefit rates be worked out and how much should each benefit be? \n\nWorkshop participants will also be welcome to identify solutions on the whole range of issues relevant to social security/welfare benefits. For example\, sanctions\, Child Benefit\, Local Welfare Assistance Schemes\, National Insurance contributory benefits\, support for housing costs and council tax\, individual/household assessments and payments\, how increased spending on benefits can be financed\, the balance between means-testing or being contributions-based and reflecting people’s particular needs or being universal? etc. \nWorkshop format\nThe workshop will have a participatory format including small group work and consensus building activities. \nIt will be structured around the Call for Solutions being made by the Commission on Social Security led by Experts by Experience but will also identify other possible activity. \nWho should attend? \nAnyone interested in a better social security/welfare benefits system! Whether you are an individual Expert by Experience\, part of a user-led or community group\, from a third sector organisation\, academia or anywhere else\, you will be made very welcome.  \nWorkshop organisers\nMichael Orton and Kate Summers \nAny queries please email Michael.Orton@warwick.ac.uk

RCAC also supports individuals to become “Community Champions”\, as actors and agents of change in their own communities\, making a difference for themselves and the wider society. RCAC is managed by a Board (voluntary management committee) made up of representatives from the GRT communities\, meaning that community members have a role as decision-makers and are part of the process of shaping the advocacy and rights agenda that RCAC promotes. \nThe Company believes it is essential that the GRT communities be at the forefront of social progress and positive developments in social inclusion\, in the struggle or the recognition of GRT rights and promoting inter-cultural understanding. Within Wales and increasingly across the UK\, our advice and expertise is sought by local governments\, policy-makers\, decision-takers and local or national institutions. We are asked to evaluate the effectiveness of their policies and strategies or to support them in consultation to ensure the voice of the GRT communities they serve\, is heard. \nWe lead on advocacy for these vulnerable communities\, influencing the policy and strategy agendas in the context of a devolved Welsh Government and\, increasingly internationally across the UK\, and we deliver quality training for those who work with Gypsy\, Roma\, Traveller communities\, who wish to improve their reach and their impact. \nBook at Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gypsies-roma-travellers-rights-responsibilities-tickets-57994190184?utm_term=eventurl_text

SUMMARY:Gypsy\, Roma & Traveller History Month Childrens Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:INVITATION TO Gypsy\, Roma & Traveller History Month Childrens Festival 2019 \nDate: Monday 8th July 2019 – 10.30am – 3pm \nVenue: St David’s Hall\, The Hayes\, Cardiff CF10 1AH  \nhttp://www.romaniarts.co.uk/gypsy-roma-and-traveller-history-month-in-wales-2019/ \n  \nSOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT: \nChallenge your opinions\, indulge in the culture and share in the activities that demonstrate a rich cultural heritage within Wales.  \n It’s free to adults and children alike from all backgrounds and communities!   \nThere will be films\, live performances\, art\, and exhibitions that showcase the cultural diversity of the Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller community in Wales. You will be astonished and engaged by the amazing skills\, heritage\, stories\, history\, art\, theatre and dance that will be displayed throughout the day.   \nWhatever your background\, ability\, perception or age\, come and join this ever growing annual event that provide fun for all the family.   \nIsaac Blake Director of the Romani Cultural and Arts Company says “We are proud to be leading on this successful programme again in 2019. It is exciting to be able to link up so many different communities to celebrate tolerance and diversity.” \nDr Adrian Marsh\, “Gypsy\, Roma\, Traveller History Month is the opportunity to acknowledge the extraordinary genius of the Romani and Traveller communities in all their rich diversity and their contribution to Welsh and more broadly\, British society\, in the face of almost overwhelming prejudice and intolerance. The Romani language has influenced popular English\, with words such as “dad”\, “pal”\, “kushti” and others that even appear in Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’ (dukka me\, or ‘I fortell’); Romani culture has brought the fairy-tale from its Indian origins to Britain\, herbal lore and medicines\, puppets\, plays and mummery; all these owe their origins or were profoundly influenced by Romani culture from the east. Metal-working and complex smithying were trades that were carried by Travellers and Romani communities through the British Isles\, along with horses and trading in dogs\, birds and rabbits. Fortune-telling and entertainment of all kinds were widely considered to be the prerogative of Romani people from the mediaeval period to the early twentieth century\, especially in rural Britain. Much of what is considered English\, Scottish or Welsh ‘folk’ music and dance owes its existence to Romani traditions and Irish ‘traditional’ music is almost entirely based in the heritage of the Travelling people. The History Month is a chance to rediscover the contribution to the past and the present that Romani and Traveller people have made and to recognise that our history has been hidden.” \nShould you be working with schools in any capacity\, please can you forward the attached ‘Schools Invitation’ to your Headteacher contacts.

DESCRIPTION:Policy Forum for Wales Keynote Seminar\nAssessing progress on improving well-being in Wales – implementing Public Service Boardwell-being plans and sharing good practice\nwith \nNoreen Blanluet\, Director\, Co-production Network for Wales; Duncan Mackenzie\, Senior Consultant\, Data Cymru; Dr Alan Netherwood\, Honorary Research Fellow\, Cardiff University and Clare Pillman\, Chief Executive\, Natural Resources Wales \nBydd cyfieithu ar y pryd ar gael yn y gynhadledd hon \nSimultaneous translation will be available at this conference \nFollow us @PFWEvents | This event is CPD certified \nMorning\, Thursday\, 27th June 2019 \nCentral Cardiff \n  \nNote: fees apply to most delegates\, but concessionary and complimentary places are available (subject to terms and conditions – see below). \nThis seminar focuses on well-being in Wales and will assess progress on implementing measures in the 2015 Well-being of Future Generations Act. \nIt will be a timely opportunity for policymakers and key stakeholders to review the first annual reports from the Public Service Boards (PSBs) and their Well-being Plans\, and to discuss further priorities\, next steps\, and sharing lessons learnt and best practice. \nAs discussion will focus on the work of PSBs\, especially with regard to local well-being plans\, we thought this might be of particular interest. There will also be speaking contributions from Clare Pillman\, Chief Executive\, Natural Resources Wales and Duncan Mackenzie\, Senior Consultant\, Data Cymru. \nDelegates will discuss how PSBs and other public bodies are meeting their duties under the Act – which includes a requirement to take future public well-being into account when making decisions. \nThey will consider evidence\, research and data on what is currently working and what is not\, and how experience so far might affect the future direction of policy and development of good practice. \nPlanned sessions will bring out insights into PSB work in practice\, the challenges faced and how they are being addressed\, including how citizens can be better involved in designing and delivering policy\, as well as how bodies can be held accountable for their working. \nWe also expect discussion of innovative practice with examples that have brought about benefits for communities and more widely. \nFurther discussion will look at how such practice can be effectively shared and replicated across Wales – looking at the culture\, mindset\, resources and leadership needed to cultivate innovative practice\, and the potential pitfalls that need to be avoided if communities are to make the most of the well-being plans. \nOverall areas for discussion include: \n\nImplementation – next steps for Public Service Board working and identifying solutions for local needs;\nAssessment – priorities for accountability strategies\, and how well-being plans can be effectively scrutinised in their locality; and\nSharing good practice – looking at various examples of innovation which have improved outcomes under the 4 pillars – economic\, social\, cultural and environmental.\n\nThe draft agenda is copied below my signature\, and a regularly updated version is available to download here. The seminar is organised on the basis of strict impartiality by the Policy Forum for Wales. Follow us @PFWEvents for live updates. \nSpeakers \nWe are delighted to be able to include in this seminar keynote addresses from: Noreen Blanluet\, Director\, Co-production Network for Wales; Duncan Mackenzie\, Senior Consultant\, Data Cymru; Dr Alan Netherwood\, Honorary Research Fellow\, Cardiff University and Clare Pillman\, Chief Executive\, Natural Resources Wales. \nAdditional senior participants are being approached\, but if you or a colleague would like to be considered as a speaker at this seminar\, please contact us at speakeroffers@forumsupport.co.ukspecifying the event and session where you would like to speak and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. SUMMARY:The First all-Wales Menopause Summit in Cardiff
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to invite you to the first all-Wales Menopause Summit in Cardiff on Tuesday 25th June 2019. \n The menopause remains an unspoken health care challenge in workplaces and across society in Wales. There is a combined lack of scientific research\, lack of knowledge amongst health care professionals and a lack of knowledge for women themselves who are going through the menopause. \nNearly all women will experience the menopause at some point in their lives and yet with so little public discourse on the issue many women are left to go through it alone without support or understanding from family\, friends\, colleagues\, employers or health care providers. We aim to change this in Wales. \nThis summit aims to change that\, to bring the menopause out into the open and kick-start the conversation to discuss the challenges women face\, whilst creating an agenda for change across Wales.  \nThe event will include inspiring speakers and personal stories to inform and educate; workshops and discussion groups to share best practice and ask the difficult questions; as well as action-focused conversations to explore solutions and implement change across Wales.    \nWho is it for? \nEveryone is welcome… \n\nWomen & men who want to learn about the menopause or share their experience\nEmployers and Trade Unions\nBusiness Forums\nHealth care professionals (GPs\, Consultants\, Doctors\, physiotherapists\, specialist nurses etc)\nPolicy makers\, Public Health Wales & Welsh Government\nCharities & Voluntary organisations working with and for women\nAcademics & Researchers\n\nPlease share this invitation with colleagues\, friends and your networks who may also be interested in attending. \nYou can register to attend here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-all-wales-menopause-summit-tickets-55972082004 \n   \nWe hope you are able to join us on the day and look forward to receiving your confirmation of attendance. \nIf you have any questions please email kat@shareimpact.org \nBest regards\, \nKat\n(Supported by FTWW) \n  \n\n  \nRydym yn falch iawn o’ch gwahodd i’r Uwchgynhadledd Menopos gyntaf ar gyfer Cymru yng Nghaerdydd ar 25 Mehefin 2019.\n Mae’r menopos yn dal i fod yn un o’r heriau cudd o ran gofal iechyd mewn gweithleoedd ac yn y gymdeithas yng Nghymru.
