SUMMARY:Recognising and Responding to Bullying Behaviours
DESCRIPTION:A one-day Children in Wales course \nEvidence and practice show that bullying affects the emotional well-being and mental health of children and young people. Research has identified that: \n  \n – Over 30% of Childline callers report that they have experienced bullying  – 2/3 of young carers are bullied at school  – “Bullying was a common theme\, with nearly every group citing this as a reason for non-attendance” (National Behaviour and Attendance Review 2009) – 18% of pupils in Year 6\, falling to 11% in Year 10\, admit to bullying other pupils   (All Wales Survey of Bullying in Schools 2009) \n  \nReducing bullying incidents is undoubtedly a shared objective between children\, young people\, professionals and practitioners alike\, however\, addressing issues raised by children and young people can often prove challenging and\, in some instances\, we may feel unable to resolve conflict.    \n  \nIn order to address issues around bullying it is vital that professionals and practitioners\, who work with children and young people\, have a shared understanding of what determines bullying behavior\, and feel confident in applying consistent approaches to prevent and tackle bullying. \n  \nThis one-day course will provide an overview of bullying\, addressing the following areas: \n  \n – Understanding bullying and the complexity of behaviours that arise through bullying incidents – Recognising when bullying may be occurring – Responding effectively to reports of bullying – Identifying strategies to prevent bullying behaviours \n  \n  \nPrice: \nMembers £115 \nNon-members £135 \n  \nThis course is also offered as in-house training\, please contact claire.sharp@childreninwales.org.uk for more information

SUMMARY:A Sustainable Wales – Better choices for a better future Consultation Event – Sustainable Development White paper: evening overview event
DESCRIPTION:Consultation event on the White Paper proposals for the Sustainable Development Bill \nThe Sustainable Development Bill is intended to strengthen the existing governance framework for sustainable development across the public service in Wales to ensure better decision making. The Bill aims to embed sustainable development as the central organising principle of the Welsh Government and devolved public service organisations. This means that organisations are clear on what they are seeking to deliver and ensuring that strategic decisions are informed by consideration of the effect on social\, economic and environmental and long term wellbeing. An independent Sustainable Development Body will also be created to offer support and guidance. \nLaunched in early December\, the White Paper is now out for consultation and you are invited to attend this event. \nThird sector organisations and community group members are invited to this event. \nThe key objective of the evening overview event is to raise awareness of the White Paper proposals and its implications for the delivery of public services in Wales. It will also prepare organisations and others who wish to organise their own events with their stakeholders. \nIf you would like to attend and to find out more\, please email sustainable.development@wales.gsi.gov.uk \nFor further details about the Bill visit www.wales.gov.uk/sustainabledevelopment

SUMMARY:Promoting Infant Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Research shows that mental health problems often have their roots in early childhood. The first years of a child’s life have a significant influence on brain development and the development of social and mental well-being. An infant’s early experiences are dependent on the interaction between them and their parents\, or main care giver\, and the environment in which they live. Support for families in a baby’s first years can increase the likelihood that they will form secure attachment with their parents\, which can have lasting benefits for their subsequent development. Early intervention and prevention can often prevent the development of mental health problems in later years. The focus of this Children in Wales event will be on research evidence and promising practice in relation to promoting infant mental health and the need for a strong foundation in mental health and wellbeing from the early years of a child’s life. Children in Wales aims to raise the strategic profile of infant mental health and identify challenges and opportunities for the future. The event will aim to increase delegates’ understanding and give them the opportunity to consider their own policy and practice\, alongside sharing experiences and practice. This conference will be of particular benefit to all professionals working with infants and their families\, and those supporting parents\, including:Health VisitorsMidwives Social WorkersMental health professionalsFlying Start WorkersEarly Years workersThose supporting parentsAnyone with a policy lead or interest in early years or family support   \nCosts: Members: £65    Non-members: £75  (including lunch)
