SUMMARY:Census data: Beyond 2011 event
DESCRIPTION:What is Beyond 2011? \nBeyond 2011 is the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) programme to consider possible approaches to meeting future user needs for small area and socio-demographic information in England and Wales. This is essentially reviewing what is currently produced by the Census and evaluating its use to help develop the approach needed. \n   \nWhy does this affect you? \nImprovements in technology and administrative data sources offer opportunities to modernise the existing Census approach. As a result some information may not be collected unless it is made clear the benefit that it brings. \nThe ONS and Welsh Government are working together to determine the user needs in Wales. They have been asked to support this work to ensure wide engagement within the public sector in Wales. They believe that this will differ from the needs in England due to the increased partnership working in Wales in relation to Local Service Boards and Single Integrated Plans. \n    \nThis free Welsh public sector engagement event will give you: \n·         an overview of the Beyond 2011 programme; \n·         an outline of the options currently available; and \n·         an opportunity to participate in workshop sessions to help us understand how Census data is being used in Wales. \n    \nWho should attend? \nWe need to hear from anyone that uses Census data to understand how small area data is used locally in Wales and how it adds value. You should be able to explain precisely why the data is being used\, how often\, in what form and at what geographical level. The workshop sessions will help you explain the benefit of this data being available to you. \n   \nRegistration process \nIf you would like to register for the event please complete the form on the Data Unit Wales website by 15 March 2013.

SUMMARY:Memories Café for the Black and Minority Ethnic Community
DESCRIPTION:Memories Cafes have been running within the Alzheimer’s Society for a number of years. They provide a safe\, comfortable and relaxed environment in which people affected by or concerned about dementia can meet with others in similar circumstances. It gives them an opportunity to discuss their concerns about the progression of the disease but also\, very importantly\, it gives them a chance to socialise in a space where their challenges are accepted and understood. Staff from the Alzheimer’s Society are always on hand to provide coffee\, biscuits\, information and support.   \nWith the support of Diverse Cymru\, the Alzheimer’s Society have established a new Dementia Café in Butetown. \nThis is a safe place for those in this community who are living with serious memory problems to meet others in a similar position and find out about other sources of support. The café particularly focuses on the Black and Ethnic Minority Communities where the awareness of dementia and the importance of timely diagnosis may not be as strong as in other communities.   \nThe café is open to those who have a diagnosis of dementia and to those who may be getting concerned about their own memory or that of someone they know. It is also open to health and social care professionals who may want to pick up information on dementia.    \nIf you would like more information on the café or if you would like to talk about setting one up in your area\, please contact the Cardiff and The Vale Alzheimer’s Society Helpline on (029) 2043 4960.

SUMMARY:The Launch of the Real Tenancy Test
DESCRIPTION:Cymorth Cymru and Learning Disability Wales would like to invite you to attend the Launch of the Real Tenancy Test at the Cymorth Cymru Annual Conference 2013. \nThe Real Tenancy Test is based on the principle that all people with a learning disability\, and others who reside as tenants in supported living settings\, should be able to exercise the same rights and responsibilities\, and enjoy similar levels of choice and control over their home environment as any other tenant regardless of their need for care and support services. \nThe Real Tenancy Test is a quick test which can be used in supported living and tenancy based supported housing to indicate the extent to which real tenancy rights are being delivered. It is designed to be used by support providers\, landlords and commissioners as a self assessment tool to help them understand how their approaches and practices work for\, or against\, the exercise of real tenancy rights by their tenants and service users\, and to indicate how improvements may be made where needed. \nWhilst some people with learning disabilities have the same rights\, choice and control in their homes as all tenants should\, there are others who have tenancies in housing and support services where they do not enjoy real rights\, choice and control. This can be because although they may have a legal and binding tenancy agreement\, their home operates more like a traditional residential care service\, where a care provider runs the home and commissioners ‘place’ people in their home. \nThe Real Tenancy Test is designed to get a quick understanding of whether a tenancy in supported living gives real tenancy rights.

SUMMARY:Children in Wales' Annual Round Table Conference 2013
DESCRIPTION:Nurturing Resilience for Children and Families: What are the Protective Factors? The Round Table will provide the opportunity to consider how to tackle vulnerabilities through supporting and strengthening children\, young people and families. \nChildren in Wales’ Annual Round Table Conference will focus on how to mediate against the negative impact of poverty and disadvantage for children and families and will look particularly at the importance of protective factors and well-being in the promotion of positive child and family outcomes. \nResearch and practice regarding child welfare has traditionally focused on the identification of risk factors and the design of interventions and services to reduce their impact. Over the last decade or so researchers have been looking at the concept of resilience and have attempted to identify the processes and factors that can help promote and enhance resilience in children\, young people and their families. There is now significant recognition of the importance of early intervention and prevention and the promotion of protective factors such as supportive family relationships\, strong attachment\, supportive schools and communities and improving children and young people’s self esteem. \n  \nGwenda Thomas AM\, Deputy Minister for Children and Social Services will speak about the implications of the Social Services and Well-being Bill for children and families and there will be important presentations on child development and early intervention. \n  \nAim of the conference and who should attend? \nThe aim of the conference is to bring together leading policy makers and professionals in the field to review policy and practice in relation to the promotion of these protective factors and highlight good practice examples. The Round Table will also give delegates the opportunity to consider their own policy and practice\, alongside sharing experiences and best practice.    \n Organisations are invited to bring display material to share their current promising practice.

DESCRIPTION:With the support of Capita Symonds\, Cardiff Business Partnership\, Heads of the Valleys Development Company\, Cardiff Business School\, Powell Dobson Urbanists\, Jones Lang LaSalle and Wardell Armstrong \nThis conference explores the practical challenges facing policy-makers in making a reality of proposals for creating a successful Metro for south-eastern Wales. It comes two years after the IWA and the Cardiff Business Partnership launched A Metro for Wales’ Capital City Region. It argued that\, using the electrification of Great Western Main Line to Swansea and the Valley lines as a catalyst\, a Metro linking the Welsh capital with the Valleys would create the connectivity essential to economic development in the 21st Century. This\, it said\, should be a major priority for the governments at both Cardiff and Westminster\, and for local authorities and the business community. A year later\, with electrification of the Great Western Main line agreed\, now is the time to press for the advantages to flow through Cardiff’s hinterland. How can we seize the initiative to create an integrated Metro that will connect together the whole of the region? How can we raise the finance to put the project into effect? What kind of delivery mechanisms will be needed? How can local authorities\, the Welsh Government and the private sector work together to produce practical answers to these questions? \nA new report engaging with the policy initiatives needed to make a Welsh Metro happen will be launched at the conference. \n – £56 for IWA members – £70 for non-members – £90 for a conference place and 1 year’s IWA membership\, which includes unlimited digital access to all IWA publications \nFor a full conference programme\, visit http://www.iwa.org.uk/en/events/view/211 \nTickets can either be booked on the website or alternatively please email wales@iwa.org.uk or telephone 029 2066 0820.

SUMMARY:Information session on the benefit changes for service users and carers
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with PROMHS\, Hafal would like to present: \nAn information session on the benefit changes for service users and carers. \nThe Welfare Reform Act received Royal Ascent in March 2012 and a number of changes to the benefit system are already in motion. However\, come April 2013 it is said the changes expected are likely to be the most significant  changes in over 65 years.  As such we have experts in the welfare reforms who will aim to provide participants with up to the minute information on the changes.      Briefing Outline Concentrating specifically on benefits\, we aim to unpick and explain the changes expected within: \n – Personal Independent Payments – Universal Credit – Benefit Cap – Changes to council tax – Housing benefit / bedroom tax \n   \nAll participants will also have a 1 side sheet with the main points covered within the session to take away as reminders.  This sessions aims to be informative but in a very informal setting. The speakers are experts in their field and will where possible take questions.     Who should apply? This information session is primarily for service users and carers. However\, consideration will also be provided for community workers who support people with mental ill health. Also note a separate session will be provided later in the year within the carers link group.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Time Banking
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this WCVA Participation Cymru course is to outline different methodologies for the practical implementation of Time 4 Young People. \n    \nContent:   \nPerson to agency timebanking has become a well evidenced and recognised resource in Wales within a relatively short time frame. The New Economics Foundation in “The New Wealth of Time: How Timebanking helps people build better public services” evidences that person to agency timebanking is a cost effective and high impact method of engaging ‘people as a resource to co-produce services’. Timebanking has had a dramatic impact in engaging young people as positive contributors to their communities in areas suffering from high levels of disengagement and anti-social behaviour. Many of these young people passively attend youth services\, but are difficult to actively engage. This 1-day session outlines different methodologies for the practical implementation of Time 4 Young People enabling youth services to successfully and actively engage young people into constructive patterns of behaviour. \n     \nBy attending this course you will be able to: \n – Move youth work out of closed youth club environments: promote inclusion – Increase levels of membership and participation: engage collective action \n   \nOutcomes for young people: \n – Builds a positive image of young people: young people feel more valued – Engages young people in community projects: develops life skills and confidence – Gives young people responsibility: assists transition into adulthood \n   \nOutcomes for communities \n – Builds new relationships and social networks and social networks: creating respect and trust – Young people become active citizens: lowering levels of anti-social behaviour – Improves the environment: increases the feeling of ownership and pride \n   \nWho is this course for? Organisations working with young people who wish to develop Timebanking opportunities. \n   Price \nWCVA Members £125 Voluntary Organisations £155 Others £185
