SUMMARY:Risk and Resilience in Cyberspace: Exploring Young People's Use of Multi Media
DESCRIPTION:A one-day Children in Wales course \nYoung people today live in two worlds; the real and virtual world. Keeping up with the development of technology and understanding young people’s use of multimedia can be a daunting prospect\, especially when you are not native to the digital era. With 200 million websites and one trillion webpages on the Internet it can also be difficult to monitor and protect children from inappropriate and harmful content. Multimedia and developments in technology have many positive benefits to the social and academic development of children. However\, the risks children have faced throughout the ages have also evolved with the growth of new technology. Reports of cyber bullying have perpetuated over the past few years\, with around 30% of young people aged 11-16 having experienced some form of cyber bullying\, and can be difficult to challenge and address when it arises. \nThis course aims to equip professionals with the knowledge and understanding of multimedia\, explore young people’s usage of technology\, and define what cyber bullying is and what it looks like. \n  \nCourse outcomes: \n – Identifying trends in media use – Exploring and understanding the nature of cyber bullying – Identifying vulnerable groups and build resilience – Promoting E-safety and safeguarding children online \n    \nMembers £115 \nNon-members £135 \nBook via the Children in Wales website.

SUMMARY:Theatre Versus Oppression presents SOLD
DESCRIPTION:Created by J S Hartley Six characters collide at a city centre bus stop on a series of winter evenings\, human suffering finding solace in its fellow’s pain. Sold is a play based on the testimonies of individuals who have all suffered at the hands of traffickers in Wales. They come from different backgrounds and circumstances\, all different ages and each with their own individual shocking story of how they have been trafficked. Moving and darkly humourous\, this insight into victims’ lives shows us how close to home the problem lies. Suitable for ages 13+ with guidance – strong language is used and discussions centre around trafficking issues at times. \n   \nTheatre Versus Oppression is working with Welsh Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales\, Joyce Watson in raising awareness and addressing the issue of human trafficking through SOLD. SUMMARY:Jon Murdoch Memorial Lecture: Representing the Anthropocene: Who Will Get to Speak for Everything and How?
DESCRIPTION:Professor Noel Castree\, The University of Manchester\, Professor of Geography \nPublic lecture hosted by the Innovation and Engagement Unit. \n‘The Anthropocene’ has morphed from a neologism to a buzzword in the academic world\, but has yet to become a keyword in the wider world. An unusually big and future facing idea with far-reaching implications for the present\, the Anthropocene may in time become part of the lingua franca in the commercial\, political and public realms. \nThis lecture engages in some ‘anticipatory semantics’. It explores who might seek to represent the Anthropocene\, including but going beyond the epistemic community of scientists who have so far made most of the discursive running. \nFind out more and register your place on the Cardiff University website.
