SUMMARY:'What's the Beef?' A Horsemeat Round Table Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This event is organised by Cardiff University’s School of Planning and Geography \nOver three months have elapsed since the practice of replacing processed beef with horsemeat was uncovered. Shortly after\, it became evident the problem was not confined to the UK and Ireland\, as most countries in Europe became involved. The practice of replacing processed beef with horsemeat and failing to inform consumers is unacceptable and reports indicate local farmers and butchers are experiencing an upturn in sales due to consumers leaving the supermarkets and turning to them to ensure the reliability of meat sources. \nA panel of experts have been selected. Chair: Professor Terry Marsden\, Director\, Sustainable Places Research Institute. \nConfirm your place by registering at www.cardiff.ac.uk/cplan/events

SUMMARY:Recognising and Responding to Bullying Behaviours
DESCRIPTION:A one-day Children in Wales course \nEvidence and practice shows that bullying affects the emotional well-being and mental health of children and young people. Research has identified that:  \n – Over 30% of Childline callers report that they have experienced bullying  – 2/3 of young carers are bullied at school  – “Bullying was a common theme\, with nearly every group citing this as a reason for non-attendance” (National Behaviour and Attendance Review 2009) – 18% of pupils in Year 6\, falling to 11% in Year 10\, admit to bullying other pupils   (All Wales Survey of Bullying in Schools 2009) \n  \nReducing bullying incidents is undoubtedly a shared objective between children\, young people\, professionals and practitioners alike\, however\, addressing issues raised by children and young people can often prove challenging and\, in some instances\, we may feel unable to resolve conflict.    \n  \nIn order to address issues around bullying it is vital that professionals and practitioners\, who work with children and young people\, have a shared understanding of what determines bullying behavior\, and feel confident in applying consistent approaches to prevent and tackle bullying. \n  \nThis one-day course will provide an overview of bullying\, addressing the following areas:  \n – Understanding bullying and the complexity of behaviours that arise through bullying incidents – Recognising when bullying may be occurring – Responding effectively to reports of bullying – Identifying strategies to prevent bullying behaviours \n  \nPrice: Members £115   Non-members £135

SUMMARY:Shelter Cymru 'Creating Change' seminar
DESCRIPTION:Creating change – best practice in citizen-centred services \nWithin Wales it is a commonly heard maxim that citizens are the experts on how services should be delivered. Across the Welsh housing sector\, and the wider public arena\, many organisations are working to develop better ways of listening to service users.  But despite this\, actual examples of initiatives where engagement has led to positive change remain thin on the ground. \nThis seminar brings together some of the best examples of citizen engagement for a day of learning and information-sharing. \nPrice: Standard: £95  Concession: £55
