SUMMARY:Harmful Traditional Practices
DESCRIPTION:A half-day Children in Wales course \nTraditional cultural practices reflect the values and beliefs held by members of a community\, some of which are harmful to specific groups\, such as children and women and that come under the title of gender based violence. Some practices are endemic to a particular area of the world\, while others are more widespread and rooted in cultural and religious norms.  These are often undergirded by patriarchal interpretations of religious texts and male domination. \nWales has a large and varied BAME population and some traditional customs are still practiced by communities living in Wales. \nThis half day course will consider ‘honour’ based violence and other harmful traditional practices that affect children and young people\, including female genital mutilation\, forced/early marriage\, ‘honour ‘ violence and abuse linked to the belief in witchcraft.  The course will also touch on lesser known issues such as son preference\, bride price\, infanticide and traditional health practices that may be seen as harmful within a Western context. \nFind out more and book via the Children in Wales website.
