SUMMARY:Getting in on the Act: How to Set Up and Run Co-operative Care and Support Services
DESCRIPTION:This Wales Co-operative Centre free\, practical workshop is designed for people planning to set-up co-operative care and well-being support services. \nThe Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act creates exciting opportunities for how care and well-being support services are delivered in Wales. It calls for more co-operatives\, social enterprises\, and user-led groups to be involved in providing personal care and well-being support services. This is because these organisations seek to place people at the heart of decisions about the type of support they access. \nThis innovative workshop is designed for people who are planning to set-up new care and well-being support services encouraged by the Act. It provides a comprehensive overview of how to develop a new service from an initial idea. \nThrough a combination of presentations\, films and group activities\, the workshop will guide you through the steps involved in finalising your business strategy\, choosing your legal model and governance\, and taking advantage of new opportunities to grow. \nYou will have the chance to apply your learning through an interactive case-study\, where the decisions you make will determine the strategy and legal structure\, of a potential service. \nThe aims of the workshop are: \n\nTo show how the principles of co-operation link to the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act.\nTo provide a practical step-by-step guide to forming a business strategy.\nTo introduce a range of legal models and show the differences between them.\nTo provide an overview of governance responsibilities and shared decision-making.\nTo give participants the chance to test and apply their learning.\nTo provide practical examples of opportunities to grow and develop services.\n\nLunch will be provided. \nTo book a place please click here.

SUMMARY:Launch of ‘Community Shares Wales’
DESCRIPTION:Investing in community shares is a simple\, direct and engaging way for community groups to raise finance and involve local people. Join actor Michael Sheen at the launch of Community Shares Wales\, a new project to support these innovative schemes across the country. \nDelivered by the Wales Co-operative Centre and funded by the Big Lottery\, the new project will raise awareness of community shares across Wales and support people through the process of share issue\, enabling them to develop local services and facilities at the heart of their community. We will be working with DTA Wales\, the Plunkett Foundation\, WCVA as well as the Community Shares Unit in England and Community Shares Scotland. \nThe launch will take place at Riverside Market Garden*. Located on 5 acres at St Hilary\, 10 miles west of Cardiff in the Vale of Glamorgan\, RMG supplies beautiful organic vegetables from its award winning market garden to Cardiff’s farmers’ markets\, local people (with a ‘veg box’ scheme)\, and restaurants. To date over 150 community shareholders have invested nearly £12\,000 between them to help fund farming equipment and polytunnels. \nDuring the launch\, you’ll have an opportunity to hear first-hand from the directors\, volunteers and shareholders at RMG how community shares have helped finance their business. \nMichael Sheen will be coming to the launch. A keen supporter of co-operatives and community ventures in Wales\, Michael is as well known for his interest in social justice and political affairs as his formidable acting career. \nIf you would like to attend the launch\, please visit the Eventbrite page http://cswaleslaunch.eventbrite.co.uk \n*Riverside Market Garden is an outdoor site which may not be fully accessible\, particularly in poor weather. In the case of adverse weather conditions\, one of the polytunnels will be used.

SUMMARY:Appropriate Touch when Working with Children
DESCRIPTION:A half-day Children in Wales course \nTouch is an essential aspect of many support roles with children\, adult physical contact is not only inevitable but beneficial.  However any practitioners are unclear and anxious about using touch in a work environment.  This half day course will allow participants to explore when touch is appropriate for their role and how this can be carried out in a transparent way that is accountable and supports safe working practices. Appropriate touch not only promotes a child’s social and emotional development but is also a highly effective and powerful method of non-verbal communication and is key to the development of healthy relationships. Touch must be child centred not staff centred and should meet with the requirements of safeguarding. \nKeeping children safe from abuse should also involve teaching children about appropriate and inappropriate touch and by doing so it should help children to better protect themselves.  Clarity should always be the aim and a child should never be left in any doubt about a member of staff’s intention behind physical contact. The context or environment in which touch takes place between practitioners and children is the over-riding factor determining the emotional and physical safety of both parties. \nFind out more and book your place via the Children in Wales website.
