DESCRIPTION:Saturday 9th August will see the 25th Anniversary Cardiff Carnival\, organised by SWICA Carnival\, transform the city centre with a riot of flamboyant carnival art\, colour and style – including over 600 costumed paraders and musicians in Wales’ biggest and most vibrant parade. Cardiff Carnival 2014 is a full day of celebration including 16 street performances in The Hayes (10.30am to 3.30pm) featuring the very best of Welsh carnival acts: free street entertainment for all the family as part of Cardiff Festival. Expect thrilling high-energy performances including samba drumming\, funky street bands as well as belly dancing\, capoeira\, world music\, family-friendly burlesque\, magic shows and surprise flashmobs. SUMMARY:Parents' Week Conference
DESCRIPTION:Children in Wales’ Parents’ Week Conference this year will be around the theme of strengthening the contribution of parenting support services to early intervention family support.  Participants will be considering key messages from early intervention research including what are the main principles and ingredients of successful parenting programmes. We will share knowledge about how to strengthen implementation efforts and consider policy developments\, new initiatives\, and good practice on the ground in Wales. Small workshops will support discussions on a range of topics relating to policy and practice including Welsh Government’s new parenting guidance\, measuring the impact of your service\, effective use of the pupil deprivation grant in parenting support\, and more to be confirmed. THE PROGRAMME \nParenting Programmes:  What Works? \nKirsten Asmussen\, Evidence Analyst at the Early Intervention Foundation.  \nKirsten will speak about what we know from research about what makes an effective parenting intervention. \n  \nWelsh Government approach to parenting support – Keynote speech from Vaughan Gething AM\, Deputy Minister for Tackling Poverty \nKey messages from the National Parenting Coordinators’ Network \nGail Bennett\, Flintshire CC and Chair of Network. Louise has worked for substance misuse services within Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan for 22 years. She has fulfilled a number of roles including establishing the substance misuse liaison service that addresses the needs of individuals with drug and alcohol problems in UHW and Llandough hospitals. Louise is currently a Consultant Nurse in substance misuse and honorary lecturer at Cardiff University. She works clinically with clients within the homelessness setting and was awarded RCN Nurse of the Year in Wales 2012 for her project that aims to raise awareness of alcohol related brain injury within this population. SUMMARY:Prenatal alcohol exposure and the lifelong effects: Are we really doing enough?
DESCRIPTION:Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading\, known\, preventable intellectual disability and is only caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. International studies have suggested that 1 in 100 people may have FASD; other studies have suggested that 5 in 100 people have this condition\, meaning that there could statistically be between 8000 and 40\,000 babies born a year with this condition in the UK\, though it is unlikely that many would be diagnosed. Naturally these babies grow up and will require support throughout their lives. \nThis NewLink Wales course is aimed at people who are working with children and young people or adults with mental health problems/disabilities within any setting. By the end of the course\, participants will be able to identify the causes of FASD and explore the long term effects of FASD on young people and adults. They will also be able to explain the difference between FAS (Foetal Alcohol Syndrome) and FASD. DESCRIPTION:This very practical course is intended to help people who facilitate meetings\, involvement events\, discussion or focus groups\, seminars or workshops to create the conditions that will enable people to contribute and find the whole experience rewarding. \n  \nWhy attend? \nHave you ever left a meeting or event wishing more people had spoken up about an issue or concern? Various reasons can prevent people from doing so. As a facilitator you want all participants to feel that they were able to make a worthwhile contribution.  Very often more is required than just saying ‘feel free’ to speak up\, or saying ‘what do you think?’ \nThe course has lots of practical tips for how to encourage people to say what is on their minds. \nSimilarly some people are excluded from events (for example disabled people\, older people and people from ethnic minorities) because their different needs are not taken into account in how the meeting is run. \nThe course will give you lots of ideas about how to organise and run accessible and inclusive meetings in ways that enable all the people present to be involved\, so that meetings are more creative\, productive and enjoyable.  \nWho should attend? \nIf you facilitate or chair meetings\, involvement events\, discussion or focus groups\, seminars or workshops where it is important that participants do some or most of the talking\, and wish to learn how to maximise people’s contribution\, this course is for you. \n  \nFind out more on the Diverse Cymru website.
