SUMMARY:IWA Coffee Shop Debate - Should we learn to love the nanny state?
DESCRIPTION:FREE event \nThrough the 19th century and most of the 20th century\, public health was about things that happened to us (like infectious diseases) and the answers were about tangible things like vaccines and sewers. For the last 30 years or so\, public health has often been about things we do to ourselves (overeating\, not exercising\, smoking and drinking) and the answers have been harder to find.  \n   With so much ill-health now linked to the way we live\, whose responsibility is changing our behaviour? Should we be left to make our decisions about what we do\, eat or drink\, without government advice or control? Or by stepping back from managing our lifestyle\, would government simply leave the field clear for businesses to cash in or our unhealthy habits?  \n   With healthcare publicly funded\, and almost all of us relying on public services to look after us if we become unwell or infirm\, can government legitimately take action to stop us harming our own health? Should government be creating opportunities to be healthy\, or removing opportunities to be unhealthy? Are measures like a minimum price for alcohol a step too far\, or reasonable measure to prevent harm?  \n   Andrew Misell is Manager of Alcohol Concern Cymru\, a charity working to promote sensible drinking and a healthier relationship with alcohol in Wales. \n   To register your place please call Emma Brennan on 029 2066 0820 or email emmabrennan@iwa.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Making sense of the NHS in Wales
DESCRIPTION:In association with General Medical Council and Royal College of Nursing Wales. \nThe future of the NHS in Wales has never been more contested. There are unprecedented pressures on budgets\, dire warnings about the unsustainability of the current package of services\, and at the same time a general acceptance that we need to get the NHS\, local government and individuals working together to improve the nation’s health. Against this backdrop\, the Health Boards are proposing significant changes to the most high profile part of the service: the acute hospitals. Of all the areas of public policy in Wales\, health is probably the most impenetrable for the non-specialist. Yet it is also the one which generates most concern. \nThis conference provides a space for interested lay people to get to grips with the evidence\, opinion and argument\, and make up their own minds about health policy. \n – £56 for IWA members – £70 for non-members – £90 for a conference place and 1 year’s IWA membership\, which includes unlimited digital access to all IWA publications \nFor a full conference programme please click on the following link http://www.iwa.org.uk/en/events/view/204 \nTickets can either be booked on the IWA website\, by emailing wales@iwa.org.uk or phoning (029) 2066 0820.

SUMMARY:Early Support Parents Workshops
DESCRIPTION:This is a 4-day course. The other days are 5 February\, 19 February and 5 March 2013.Are you the parent or carer of a child with additional needs or disability? \nWould you like to meet other parents and discover what support is available for your family? Would you like to know who can help you and where to find them? \n – Would you like to have a say in planning services for your child and would you like help with understanding confusing jargon? – Would you like to hear and share ideas about enjoying life with your whole family however challenging that may seem at times?Early Support is the Welsh Government’s mechanism to improve the quality\, consistency and co-ordination of services for disabled children under five and their families. The parents’ workshops are a key element of this approach and parents have received funding from the Welsh Government to lead these workshops. These workshops were written by parents\, for parents and are delivered by parents.  Who the workshops are for?The workshops are aimed at parents/carers and the wider family of a disabled child. They can also be open to practitioners working directly with very young disabled children and their families but only if the practitioner has been invited to attend by a parent/carer. Though Early Support is focused on children under five\, the workshops are open to parents of older disabled children who are feeling isolated or who feel they do not have sufficient information.  Structure of workshopsThe sessions (10am – 2.30pm) are FREE plus they will pay for childcare and travel. These four workshops are informal\, with plenty of opportunity to meet other families\, chat and share experiences. There are four workshops: – Workshop 1 – Understanding this new world – explores national and local services\, Early Support and the Early Support materials. – Workshop 2 – Changing relationships – explores the implications of working in partnership with service providers. – Workshop 3 – The child beyond the disability – explores the issues around dealing with feelings and enjoying your child. – Workshop 4 – The importance of the ordinary in all our lives – considers the wider family and the importance of time for you.

SUMMARY:Recognising and Responding to Bullying Behaviours
DESCRIPTION:A one-day Children in Wales course \nEvidence and practice show that bullying affects the emotional well-being and mental health of children and young people. Research has identified that: \n  \n – Over 30% of Childline callers report that they have experienced bullying  – 2/3 of young carers are bullied at school  – “Bullying was a common theme\, with nearly every group citing this as a reason for non-attendance” (National Behaviour and Attendance Review 2009) – 18% of pupils in Year 6\, falling to 11% in Year 10\, admit to bullying other pupils   (All Wales Survey of Bullying in Schools 2009) \n  \nReducing bullying incidents is undoubtedly a shared objective between children\, young people\, professionals and practitioners alike\, however\, addressing issues raised by children and young people can often prove challenging and\, in some instances\, we may feel unable to resolve conflict.    \n  \nIn order to address issues around bullying it is vital that professionals and practitioners\, who work with children and young people\, have a shared understanding of what determines bullying behavior\, and feel confident in applying consistent approaches to prevent and tackle bullying. \n  \nThis one-day course will provide an overview of bullying\, addressing the following areas: \n  \n – Understanding bullying and the complexity of behaviours that arise through bullying incidents – Recognising when bullying may be occurring – Responding effectively to reports of bullying – Identifying strategies to prevent bullying behaviours \n  \n  \nPrice: \nMembers £115 \nNon-members £135 \n  \nThis course is also offered as in-house training\, please contact claire.sharp@childreninwales.org.uk for more information
