SUMMARY:Delivering Better Services for People with a Learning Disability
DESCRIPTION:This Learning Disability Wales training course looks at how valuing people with a learning disability is key to delivering better services. It considers how this can be done while achieving value for money\, thereby resulting in positive outcomes for all. It will develop participants’ understanding of how people with a learning disability have been\, and continue to be\, devalued by society and the impact that this has. Devaluation leads to exclusion\, segregation and a denial of basic human rights. \nThe course enables delegates to consider and answer the question\, “Are the ways in which services are currently delivered making a positive impact on improving the quality of life of those who receive the service\, or actually a barrier to improving quality of life outcomes?”. \nBookings:  For more information visit www.learningdisabilitywales.org.uk or call 029 2068 1160. \n  \n

SUMMARY:2nd annual Co-operative Wales / IWA national conference
DESCRIPTION:Co-operative Enterprise – Building a Better WalesDelivering wealth creation and social responsibility FREE event \nThe annual Co-operative Cymru/Wales Conference (in association with the Institute of Welsh Affairs) will\, this year\, be a special two-day event to celebrate the UN 2012 Year of the Co-operatives. \nThe conference will focus on how the co-operative model can be utilised in Wales to generate wealth and revitalise local communities\, provide for social needs on a not-for-profit basis and be the preferred model of ownership for sporting and cultural organisations. \nAs UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has put it\, “Co-operatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility.” \nA high calibre collection of speakers and discussion sessions will highlight best practice from Wales and other small nations across the world including the Basque Country\, Quebec\, Ireland and Lesotho. \nA focal point for the conference will be the launch of a major report examining the success of the Mondragon Corporation in the Basque Country. Since 1956 Mondragon has been the driving force behind the exponential growth of the co-operative sector in the Basque Country which now employs over 80\,000 people and generates approximately 7% of Basque GDP. What can we learn from the Basque experience to enable the co-operative and mutual sector to make an enhanced contribution to the Welsh Economy and Welsh society? \nIn addition to those with an interest in the co-operative model this is a must-attend event for those (in local and national government as well as the third sector) involved in and looking for innovative solutions in the fields of: housing; social care; economic development; community regeneration; and the developing world.   Conference and booking details – The conference is free and a buffet lunch will be provided. – There are a limited number of tickets available so please book early to avoid disappointment. – Please state which day/s you will be attending when booking.

SUMMARY:Growing our woodlands in Wales
DESCRIPTION:In association with the Forestry Commission Wales\, this conference will engage with the Welsh Government’s policy to significantly increase the woodland cover in Wales from the present 14 per cent of the land area to 20 per cent by 2030. Creating new woodland offers benefits to the people in Wales aside from helping mitigate the impact of climate change. New woodland will consist of mainly native trees and will provide additional wildlife habitat\, improve the quality of our landscape and waters and\, at the same time\, create useful timber products such as fuel and wood as a raw material. \nThis conference will engage with the following questions about land use: Where should this new woodland be created? What is the best way to achieve this land use change? How can we create a framework that will help us agree on where new woodland is appropriate and where it is not? How does creating new woodland fit into other objectives such as economic development\, improved water quality and maintaining important non-woodland habitats? \nIncreasing Wales’ woodland by 100\,000ha over 20 years presents a major challenge. The new policy will require farmers to plant mixed deciduous and conifer woodlands across suitable parts of largely upland Wales. This conference will address barriers to delivering the Welsh Government’s policy and the changes that will be needed to improve the likelihood of it being achieved. \nKeynote speakers: John Griffiths\, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development; Professor Gareth Wyn Jones\, Chair\, Welsh Government Land Use and Climate Change Group; Prof. Ian Bateman\, School of Environmental Sciences\, University of East Anglia; and Jon Owen Jones\, Chair\, Forestry Commission Wales. \nConference tickets for Growing our woodlands in Wales are: \n – £56 for IWA members – £70 for non-members – £95 for a conference place and 1 year’s IWA membership\, which includes unlimited digital access to all IWA publications \nFor a full conference programme please click on the following link http://www.iwa.org.uk/en/events/view/173

SUMMARY:New developments in safeguarding and CRB checks
DESCRIPTION:WCVA’s Criminal Records Unit is proud to offer a unique opportunity for you to gain a close understanding of changes in safeguarding and CRB checks\, due to be phased in from this September. \nThe Government plans to scale back criminal records and barring systems\, while still maintaining effective safeguarding. Meanwhile\, the Protection of Freedoms Act\, which came into law in May\, will bring about changes that will impact on all voluntary groups working with vulnerable people – not just those which require staff to take CRB checks. \nIt is vitally important for the sector to be up to date with their policies and procedures\, and be able to comply with legislation\, as these changes are taking place.  \nWCVA’s Criminal Records Unit\, with support from the Home Office\, will be explaining the changes at the seminars\, with plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions of your own. \nThere are two opportunities to attend the seminar on this day. The first session runs from 9.30am – 12pm and will be repeated from 1.00-3.30pm. \nPrice: £15 for WCVA members and £25 for non-members. \nYou can download a programme and booking form here. Attendance is limited\, so book quickly.
