SUMMARY:There's an SNP for that
DESCRIPTION:Institute of Welsh Affairs Coffee Shop Debate \nSince the completion of the Human Genome Project\, a new medical model has emerged called ‘personalised medicine’. Personalised medicine promises the customisation of healthcare by tailoring products\, treatments and decisions to an individual’s genomic profile. One of the most significant commercial developments in this area is the birth of ‘personal genomics’ – companies that offer DNA testing to identify common mutations (SNPs) associated with disease. Direct-to-consumer genetic testing is controversial\, to say the least. Current debates focus on whether such tests are clinically valid\, misleading or ethically inappropriate. The model that presides in the US is that individuals should have the right to access\, share and interpret their genetic information with the hope of modifying their lifestyles to avert such risks. Not much is known about how people actually use this information. In this presentation\, the debates surrounding direct-to-consumer genetic testing will be reviewed\, with examples from research of how people are using genetic data to make sense of their illness. \n  \nBiography \nMichael is a lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. He has worked on numerous projects exploring the social and ethical impact of genetic testing. Michael’s current research is tracing subsequent developments of genomic technologies. One branch pursues the impact of direct-to-consumer genetic testing and the ways in which lay communities use and interpret genetic information.  \n  \nTo register your place please call the IWA on 029 2066 0820 or email

SUMMARY:Commission on Public Service Governance and Delivery
DESCRIPTION:Public services are vital to the people of Wales but the resources available to provide them are limited and the demand for them is increasing. Notwithstanding the efforts of a dedicated public sector workforce\, some organisations are struggling to meet these challenges. The Commission on Public Service Governance and Delivery was established in April 2013 to look hard and objectively at the way public services are governed and delivered in Wales\, and how they may be improved. This broad remit covers all public services\, that includes local government (education\, social services for children and adults\, housing\, planning\, transport and highways\, etc.)\, health\, emergency services\, and cultural\, heritage and environmental services. \nTo help shape the Commission’s work they want to know what you think about public services\, for example: Do they do a good job of meeting your needs and what could be done better? Are they are easy to access when you need them? Is there a particular service or services you think are better than others? Do services collaborate effectively? How could public services be organised or delivered better? This will be an open and informal drop-in meeting where anyone can come and speak to the Commission and have their say. The Commission is committed to hearing from the users of public services in order to inform its recommendations for the future. If you would like to attend it would be useful if you could contact the Commission in advance on PublicServiceCommission@wales.gov.uk\, call 02920 826782\, but the event is informal and open and you are able to turn-up on the day. \nFor more information see www.wales.gov.uk/publicservicecommission

SUMMARY:Cardiff University policy café
DESCRIPTION:Poor Work: Experiences and Aspirations: Dave Horton: Community Development Co-ordinator\, ACE (Action in Caerau & Ely) presentation drawn from MSc dissertation from Glamorgan University which won the Dean’s prize. People who are working but who nevertheless experience poverty make up an increasing share of the total number of people in poverty in the UK. In-work poverty is a result of drastic changes within the labour market and the increasing use of welfare provision to support labour market flexibility and deregulation. The impact on wages and job security have been documented. However\, the actual experiences and opinions of those at the bottom of the labour market have largely been ignored. Dave will present the findings of his recent research carried out in a community setting with local people experiencing ‘poor work’. What do they see as important aspects of their experiences?  What are their aspirations for their working lives? And what can be done to improve their circumstances and the circumstances of others at the bottom of the labour market? For more information and to register to attend please visit: http://cardiffpolicycafepoorwork.eventbrite.com/# For any queries\, please email policycafe@cardiff.ac.uk \n … The aim of the policy cafe is to bring together researchers\, policy-makers and practitioners to encourage reflection and debate about research\, policy and practice in diverse fields of social and public policy activity. Opportunities to network\, exchange ideas and to identify future directions in research\, policy and practice in Wales are integral to the outcomes of the cafe. \n The monthly events run from 5.30-7pm and involve speakers delivering presentations or workshops arranged around a specific policy or policy area. The opportunity for round-table discussions and group feedback will be an essential part of each event. Cheese and wine will be provided. All events will take place in the Committee Rooms\, Glamorgan Building Cardiff University.
