SUMMARY:Promoting Infant Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Research shows that mental health problems often have their roots in early childhood. The first years of a child’s life have a significant influence on brain development and the development of social and mental well-being. An infant’s early experiences are dependent on the interaction between them and their parents\, or main care giver\, and the environment in which they live. Support for families in a baby’s first years can increase the likelihood that they will form secure attachment with their parents\, which can have lasting benefits for their subsequent development. Early intervention and prevention can often prevent the development of mental health problems in later years. The focus of this Children in Wales event will be on research evidence and promising practice in relation to promoting infant mental health and the need for a strong foundation in mental health and wellbeing from the early years of a child’s life. Children in Wales aims to raise the strategic profile of infant mental health and identify challenges and opportunities for the future. The event will aim to increase delegates’ understanding and give them the opportunity to consider their own policy and practice\, alongside sharing experiences and practice. This conference will be of particular benefit to all professionals working with infants and their families\, and those supporting parents\, including:Health VisitorsMidwives Social WorkersMental health professionalsFlying Start WorkersEarly Years workersThose supporting parentsAnyone with a policy lead or interest in early years or family support   \nCosts: Members: £65    Non-members: £75  (including lunch)

SUMMARY:A Sustainable Wales – Better choices for a better future Consultation Event – Sustainable Development White paper: evening overview event
DESCRIPTION:Consultation event on the White Paper proposals for the Sustainable Development Bill \nThe Sustainable Development Bill is intended to strengthen the existing governance framework for sustainable development across the public service in Wales to ensure better decision making. SUMMARY:Early Support Parents Workshops
DESCRIPTION:This is a 4-day course. The other days are 5 February\, 26 February and 5 March 2013.Are you the parent or carer of a child with additional needs or disability? \nWould you like to meet other parents and discover what support is available for your family? Would you like to know who can help you and where to find them? \n – Would you like to have a say in planning services for your child and would you like help with understanding confusing jargon? – Would you like to hear and share ideas about enjoying life with your whole family however challenging that may seem at times?Early Support is the Welsh Government’s mechanism to improve the quality\, consistency and co-ordination of services for disabled children under five and their families. The parents’ workshops are a key element of this approach and parents have received funding from the Welsh Government to lead these workshops. These workshops were written by parents\, for parents and are delivered by parents.  Who the workshops are for?The workshops are aimed at parents/carers and the wider family of a disabled child. They can also be open to practitioners working directly with very young disabled children and their families but only if the practitioner has been invited to attend by a parent/carer. Though Early Support is focused on children under five\, the workshops are open to parents of older disabled children who are feeling isolated or who feel they do not have sufficient information.  Structure of workshopsThe sessions (10am – 2.30pm) are FREE plus they will pay for childcare and travel. These four workshops are informal\, with plenty of opportunity to meet other families\, chat and share experiences. There are four workshops: – Workshop 1 – Understanding this new world – explores national and local services\, Early Support and the Early Support materials. – Workshop 2 – Changing relationships – explores the implications of working in partnership with service providers. – Workshop 3 – The child beyond the disability – explores the issues around dealing with feelings and enjoying your child. – Workshop 4 – The importance of the ordinary in all our lives – considers the wider family and the importance of time for you.
