SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing
DESCRIPTION:This popular evidence based approach has been around for nearly 30 years and been taken up by a wide range of practitioners in health and social care fields. \nThe NewLink Wales course will provide a clear understanding of the goals\, concepts\, processes and skills of Motivational Interviewing\, along with a chance to practice the skills with pre-prepared scenarios and your own material. Furthermore it provides an opportunity to identify\, distinguish and encourage the types of language that predict behaviour change whilst offering a chance to explore how workers and clients contribute to discord in the relationship (formerly described as ‘resistance’). Lastly it will enable individuals to reflect on the different types of settings and behaviour changes this approach can be utilised with and enable an opportunity to evaluate the potential effectiveness of applying this approach in your work. \nTo book onto the course or for further information contact NewLink Wales on: Telephone: 029 2052 9002 or email info@newlinkwales.org.uk or visit www.newlinkwales.org.uk

SUMMARY:“Keeping Our Children Safe” Training for Designated Person for Child Protection
DESCRIPTION:A two-day Children in Wales course \nAll children have the right to live lives free from abuse and neglect but recent events highlight\, yet again\, how difficult it can be for so many adults to recognise\, and act on concerns about the safety or welfare of a child. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all organisations concerned with children should work towards what’s best for each child. The Designated Person for Child Protection has a vital role within organisations helping to ensure that adequate safeguards are in place and that necessary action is taken when concerns about a child are raised. This course is aimed at people acting in the ‘Designated Person’ role working in a variety of organisations including schools\, children’s daycare and residential settings\, also services providing support to children and families in the voluntary and private sector. \nFind out more and book your place.

SUMMARY:National Assembly for Wales: Cross-Party Group on Children
DESCRIPTION:Are we serious about children’s rights?\nSponsored by Julie Morgan AM (Chair)\nThe physical punishment of children is the only form of inter-personal violence that remains legal in the UK. Forty-four states have already enacted legislation to change this. In 2002 the National Assembly and Welsh Government voted in favour of changing the law to give children equal protection. In 2008 the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child welcomed ‘the commitment of the National Assembly in Wales to prohibiting all corporal punishment in the home\, but notes that under the terms of devolution it is not possible for the Assembly to enact the necessary legislation.’ Despite these commitments\, extensive consultation and the ‘Rights Measure’ requiring Welsh Ministers to have due regard to the UNCRC\, now that Wales has the powers to do something there has been no progress. \nBut this can change …The Violence against Women\, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Bill is an appropriate opportunity to reform the law. This would not create a new criminal offence. It would simply give children the same protection as we have as adults. \nRSVP: Eleri Griffiths eleri.griffiths@childreninwales.org.uk \nA buffet lunch will be provided.
