SUMMARY:Reducing Accidents in Early Years Childcare Settings
DESCRIPTION:This Children in Wales course is aimed at childminders and practitioners in settings such as Day Nurseries\, Playgroups and Home Settings. \nUnintentional injuries are very common\, particularly in the early years age group. In fact\, in Wales every year\, nearly 25\,000 under 5s attend accident and emergency departments as the result of an accident.  The sad fact is that around 90% of these accidents are preventable. \nWhilst the course does not cover the legal requirements and standards for registered settings\, it does provide invaluable information for keeping the children in your care safe and free from accidents. The course will also give you a greater understanding of safety\, a knowledge of effective interventions and dispel a number of myths around accidents. \n  \nThe course will include:An overview of common accidentsAn understanding of how these accidents happenSafety without compromising child developmentEffective interventionsThe 3 Es of injury preventionPractical sessions on understanding and assessing risk  \nThe practical risk assessment session will provide a useful tool for you to take back to use in your settings. To get the most out of this session\, delegates are welcome to bring along examples of accidents that have occurred or examples that may be of concern within settings. \n  \nDelegates will receive course handouts\, notes and certificate of training.  The course qualifies for 6 Core Hours CPD points. \n  \nCOST: \nMembers £80 \nNon members £100

SUMMARY:"Keeping Our Children Safe" Training for Designated Person for Child Protection
DESCRIPTION:A two-day Children in Wales course \nAll children have the right to live lives free from abuse and neglect but recent events highlight\, yet again\, how difficult it can be for so many adults to recognise\, and act on concerns about the safety or welfare of a child.  The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all organisations concerned with children should work towards what’s best for each child.  The Designated Person for Child Protection has a vital role within organisations helping to ensure that adequate safeguards are in place and that necessary action is taken when concerns about a child are raised.   \nThis two-day training course will consider:  \n – The role of the Designated Person and how this can be incorporated into your organisation – Legislation and guidance on safeguarding children and young people\, particularly within the Welsh context – Essential safeguarding measures that need to be in place – The ‘abuse of trust’ and how to remain alert to potential sexual offences within the organisation – Assessing concerns about a child and making a referral to social services if necessary – The statutory child protection system and what may be expected of you – Confidentiality and good record keeping – Diversity and the additional vulnerabilities for some children \n  \nPrice: Members £165   Non members £195 \nFind out more and book your place via the Children in Wales website.

SUMMARY:Everyone’s Future Media Panel invite
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s Future is an exciting partnership project between Age Connects Cardiff & the Vale\, and youth organisation Vibe Experience. Funded by the Big Lottery\, they work with people of all ages to highlight and challenge age discrimination\, negative stereotypes and unfair representation of older and younger people. \nA stereotype is an oversimplified image of a particular group of people. Stereotypes ignore the individual and imply that all persons within that group share the same (often negative) characteristics. \nStereotypes lead to inaccurate assumptions and ageist attitudes\, affecting how we see ourselves and feel about others. Negative stereotypes can lead to age discrimination which is both a cause and a consequence of inequality and injustice. \n       \nEveryone’s Future Media Panel \nEveryone’s Future is bringing together representatives of the BBC\, ITV and Media Wales for the ‘Everyone’s Future Media Panel’ to talk to staff\, volunteers and partners about how older and younger people are represented in the media. \nThe event will be an opportunity for people to address the negative stereotyping of men and women relating to age. \nIf you require information about this event or Everyone’s Future\, including free workshops and training sessions\, please contact Age Equality Worker Alice Matthews on 029 2068 3694 or alice.matthews@age-concern-cardiff.org.uk
