SUMMARY:Self harming behaviours: Improving responses and minimising harm
DESCRIPTION:A one-day Children in Wales course  \nThis Children in Wales course is for all practitioners working with young people who want to increase their understanding of why young people self harm\, and how best to support those who do. Research has shown that self harm is viewed as a highly sensitive topic by professionals\, parents and young people\, with issued regarding stigma and the misunderstanding of causes leading to uncertainty as to how best to support young people who self harm. Understanding self harm is therefore crucial in providing effective support to those in need. \nBy the end of this course you will be able to: \n\n Understand common myths surrounding self harm\, as well as issues regarding stigma\n\n\nUnderstand and appreciate the perspective of other professionals\, parents and young people\nAssess and manage risk\, understand the concept of harm minimisation\, and be better able to explore alternatives to self harm within the context of your role\nApply and manage risk\, understand the concept of harm minimisation\, and be better able to explore alternatives to self harm within the context of your role\nApply proven strategies aimed at developing the resilience of those vulnerable to self harm\nDevelop a self harm policy tailored to your needs\, designed to provide clear information and guidance\nExplore and reflect upon your own feelings towards self harm\, and consider how such views influence your practice\n\nWhat others have said about the course: \nI feel less worried and scared of the topic (Teacher) \nHow is this course relevant to me? \n\nBetween 1 and 12\, and 1 in 15 children and young people deliberately self-harm\, equating to around 2 children in every classroom\n\n\nInpatient admission of young people under 25 for self harm have increased  y 68% in the last ten years\n\nOther Resources available from YoungMinds \n\nTaling Taboos – Talking Self Harm Report (YoungMinds and Cello\, 2012)\n\n\nSelf Harm Factsheet – YoungMinds Website\n\nFind out more and book via the Children in Wales website.
