SUMMARY:Fathers must stand up for their daughters
DESCRIPTION:With Professor Laura McAllister\, IWA Trustee and Chair of Sport Wales. Jonathan Ford\, CEO of the Football Association of Wales and Charles Williams\, writer and broadcaster. To celebrate Father’s Day 2013\, IWA Women is holding a coffee shop debate aimed at fathers of daughters who want equality for their children. The event will look at the widespread inequalities faced by girls in society – from education to engineering\, science to sport\, and politics to parenthood. Evidence shows that a baby girl born in 2013 will have to wait until she is drawing her pension to expect any serious parity in representation for her sex amongst the corridors of power. There have only been 13 women MPs from Wales since the Acts of Union in the 16th Century (and seven of those were chosen through all-women shortlists). More girls drop out of sport than boys during their teenage years\, with half of Year 10 female pupils not enjoying PE in school-with all of the health\, educational and well-being issues this raises. Academically in school girls outperform boys\, but this is not reflected in University admissions. Is it time to get fathers on board to help push equality for their children? They invite some prominent fathers of daughters to join us in highlighting the injustices faced by girls in Welsh society. They ask whether championing gender equality needs a shove from men as well as women. To reserve your free place\, please email emmabrennan@iwa.org.uk or call 029 2066 0820.
