SUMMARY:Cross City and Vale Teaching and Learning Event 2013
DESCRIPTION:The Cross City and Vale CPD Team is pleased to announce that the first end of year Teaching and Learning Event will be held on Friday 5th July.This event is open to anyone who is involved in delivering education to post-16 learners in Cardiff and/or the Vale. The programme includes a variety of sessions delivered by a number of different providers. All sessions are free of charge\, but need to be booked in advance.If you are interested in attending any of the events listed below\, please book your place by emailing community@cavc.ac.uk \nIn your email\, please provide the following information: the title of the session/s you wish to attend\, your name and the name of your organisation.Refreshments will be provided throughout the day and there will also be opportunities for informal networking. \n   Attendance! Why bother? (9-10am) \nThis session will include a presentation on attendance and why it is important\, who can help the student and the effect of non-attendance. Participants will also be challenged to come up with one strategy to use next year in their practice. \n  ILT (9-10am) \nThis workshop will be an opportunity to share ideas and suggestions on how information learning technology (ILT) can be integrated into your teaching and learning practices.  \n   Understanding Learning Disability: Hate/Mate Crime (9.30-10.45am) \nThis awareness session will include: \n– an ice-breaking game with delegates about life with a learning disability \n– an introduction to what hate crime is\, some case studies from the media and closer to home\, some shocking statistics\, who can help? \n– staying safe tips. \n    Cultural Awareness (10am – 12 noon) \nAn opportunity for an informal discussion with colleagues on cultural awareness experiences and issues including the sorts of things that can cause confusion and misunderstandings between people from different cultures. \n   Dissolving Barriers\, Enabling Engagement (10am – 12 noon) \nA practical workshop that explores the choices and skills we work within when we meet new learners. From a learner’s perspective\, what does it mean to be seen as disaffected or to feel vulnerable? How can we see behind the barriers and how can we prepare a pathway for engaged learning. \n   Indian Head Massage (10am – 12 noon\, repeated from 12-2pm) \nA practical session to demonstrate in pairs how to carry out an Indian Head Massage. \n   Welsh Matters \nDrop in between 10am and 1pm for ideas on: \n– Curriculum Cymreig \n– Bilingual Teaching strategies \n– Welsh awareness \n… and a Welsh cake! \n   Advancing Learner Involvement (11am – 1pm) \nA short workshop exploring the Learner Involvement agenda and practical ways of delivering improvements. Take a fresh look at learner feedback\, focus groups and learner-led progression. Distinguish between Learner Involvement approaches for priority learners (under the DfES ACL Policy) and those for recreational learners. \n     Supporting Learners through Mentoring (12-1pm) \nFind out how you can support learners through Mentoring. This introduction will provide you with information on the role of the mentor. The benefits to the mentees and how you can become a mentor. You can also find out about the accredited mentoring training programme. \n  Evaluating Soft Skills (12.30-2pm) \nCommunity Music Wales will deliver a workshop session on methods of evaluating and demonstrating soft outcomes. This session particularly relates to NEET and hard to reach young people. \n   Police and Fire Services are there to complement the learning experience\, too (1-2pm) \nThis workshop will: \n– Consider why input from the Police or Fire Service may be advantageous \n– Examine positive factors from the point of view of the learner\, the Police and the Fire Services \n– Draw conclusions in terms of learning outcomes \n   \nOther sessions: \nIndividual Learning Plans (1-2.30pm) \nEmbedding Basic Skills within ICT (1-3pm) \nDifferentiation (2-3pm) \nUnderstanding Disability Hate/Mate Crime (2.30-3.45pm) \nWhat can volunteers do to support your organisation? (2.30-3.30pm) \n
