SUMMARY:Confronting Hate Crime in the UK
DESCRIPTION:Confronting Hate Crime in the UK: Developing Strategies to Promote a Tolerant Society\nCentral London \nThursday 3rd October 2019 \nEvent Details  Event Brochure  Website  Register to Attend \nBetween 2017 and 2018\, there were 94\,098 recorded incidents of hate crime in England and Wales\, an increase of 17% compared to the previous year (Home Office 2018). Despite improved numbers of people reporting hate crime\, only 51% of victims are happy with the police response. \n The Government introduced the Hate Crime Action Plan in 2016 and updated this in 2018. This brought a wide number of new initiatives. The Government announced a new Law Commission review into hate crime\, as well as committing £3.4 million towards the protection of places of worship. A new £200\,000 hate crime hub was opened in 2018 in order to better help police counter the challenge. However issues and controversies surround the area of Hate Crimes. Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary found inadequate responses in 89 of 180 hate crime cases it reviewed. Others such as the Fawcett Society consider the definition of ‘hate crime’ to be incomplete in UK criminal law\, and have argued misogyny should be included in this classification. \n This symposium therefore offers delegates from the police\, local authorities\, minority support groups and other key figures the opportunity to discuss and debate how best to tackle hate crime and improve tolerance in British society. \n Delegates will: \n\nDevelop an understanding of the Hate Crime Action Plan\, what it promises and how much it has achieved\nAssess approaches to improving awareness surrounding hate crime and how to improve education about it\nDebate how the police and authorities can better respond to reports of hate crime within their communities\nLearn approaches to better integrate minority groups into the wider community\, and to feel safe with British society\nDiscover innovate solutions to better help victims of hate crime recover from their ordeal\nAnalyse the existence of sectarianism in the UK and how to tackle it\nEstablish best practice in tackling hate crime amongst grassroots groups on a local level\nDevelop an effective and suitably inclusive definition of ‘hate crime’ which meets practical need\n\n To view our brochure\, including the full event programme\, click here. \n We would like to advise you that we offer a 20% reduction off the standard delegate registration fee (subject to type of organisation and terms and conditions) for registrations received by the 30th August 2019. Do feel free to circulate this information to relevant colleagues within your organisation. \n In the meantime\, to ensure your organisation is represented\, please register online or complete and return the attached registration form at your earliest convenience in order to secure your delegate place(s). \n Kind regards\, \n Conference Team Public Policy Exchange Tel: 020 3137 8630 Fax: 020 3137 1459
